# Install & auto-update

Part of the doc set: [PixGamma](https://phatdev.net/en/docs/pixgamma.md)

> DMG install, CLI, Recover models, update token, requirements and troubleshooting.

## Install the app

1. Open the PixGamma repository's Releases page and download `PixGamma-<version>.dmg` (releases up to 0.2.1 use the old name `Pixora-<version>.dmg`).
2. Open the DMG and drag **PixGamma** into **Applications**.
3. First launch: right-click PixGamma in Applications → **Open** → **Open**. The app is ad-hoc signed and not notarized by Apple, so macOS asks once.
4. For the `pixgamma` command in Terminal, double-click **Cài lệnh pixgamma (CLI).command** in the DMG. It links the command into `/opt/homebrew/bin`, `/usr/local/bin` or `~/.local/bin`.

If macOS says the app "is damaged" or refuses to open it, run once:

```bash
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/PixGamma.app
```

The DMG already contains every upscaling model (about 650 MB). On first run Core ML compiles the models for your Mac, which takes a few tens of seconds; later runs are fast.

## Auto-update

PixGamma checks for a new version once a day; check now from **PixGamma → Kiểm tra cập nhật…** When a release is available the app shows its notes, downloads the DMG, **verifies its SHA-256**, checks the bundle id and version number, swaps the app (keeping the old one to roll back a failed copy) and relaunches.

The PixGamma repository is private, so the first time the app needs a **read-only GitHub token**, stored in the Mac's Keychain:

1. Create a **fine-grained token** on GitHub.
2. **Repository access**: only the PixGamma repository. **Permissions → Contents**: Read-only.
3. Paste the token into the app's update dialog.

From Terminal:

| Command | Does |
|---|---|
| `pixgamma update` | Check for a new version |
| `pixgamma update --install` | Download and install (quit the app first) |
| `pixgamma update --token <token>` | Save the token in the Keychain |

`PIXGAMMA_GITHUB_TOKEN` can replace the Keychain for scripts.

## Recover models (optional)

Recover uses diffusion and its models weigh about 2.7 GB, so they ship apart from the DMG as two zip files (GitHub Releases allows 2 GB per file):

1. Download `PixGamma-Recover-<version>-1.zip` and `-2.zip` into **Downloads** (up to 0.2.1: `Pixora-Recover-…`).
2. In the DMG, double-click **Cài model Recover.command**. The models go to `~/Library/Application Support/PixGamma/Models/Recover`.
3. Reopen PixGamma; the **Recover** card appears.

## Requirements

| | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| macOS | 14 Sonoma | 15 or later |
| Chip | Apple Silicon M1 | M2/M3/M4 Pro, Max or Ultra |
| RAM | 8 GB (regular modes) | 32 GB or more for Recover |
| Free disk | 1 GB | 4 GB with Recover |

## Uninstall

Delete `/Applications/PixGamma.app` and `~/Library/Application Support/PixGamma`. If you installed the CLI, also delete `pixgamma` from `/opt/homebrew/bin`, `/usr/local/bin` or `~/.local/bin`.

## Troubleshooting

| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| macOS says the app is damaged | Run the `xattr` command above and open it again |
| `pixgamma: command not found` | Double-click **Cài lệnh pixgamma (CLI).command**, open a new Terminal |
| No Recover card | The Recover models are not installed |
| Update says the token cannot read the repository | The token needs Contents: Read-only on the PixGamma repository |
| The Mac slows down during Recover | Recover uses a lot of GPU memory; close virtual machines and heavy browsers |
